According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), prisons in Lagos, Rivers and Kano state had the highest numbers of inmates in 2016, while Ekiti had the lowest number of inmates. The data also shows that Nigerian prisons were congested in 2016, as Nigeria has a prison capacity for 50,773 inmates but the total number of inmates in that period was 68,686.
